I've tried to get away from discussions of politics. I don't see too much benefit in such discussions. But Pyromaniacs has a thought-provoking post on the addition of Emergent Pastor Brian McLaren to Barack Obama's campaing staff.
I think we Evangelicals have a lot of repenting to do and a lot of ground to cover in trying to regain biblical Christianity.
Read this, which is a first part in a three part expose of some of McClaren's heretical teachings.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, Richard, I am concerned that what gets people talking are things like the gender debates, but the fact that a popular emergent teacher is spouting such lies as teaching Jesus didn't primarily come to keep some out of hell, but to teach us how to live in this life, is getting very little comment and reaction in so many places.
And the postmodern slippery eel rhetoric of these emergents is enough to drive one insane.
It's like Mark Studdock's uneasy feeling listening to John Wither in That Hideous Strength -- after hearing Wither, who had all the power in the corrupt N.I.C.E. ramble on and on, he wondered, but dared not ask, what in the world he was talking about.
Hi Lynn - Happy Fourth of July!
ReplyDeleteI agree with your assessment of the importance of discussing the heresies of some of the leaders of the Emergent Church. And in my circles this is discussed all the time, whereas the gender stuff is not ever discussed - which, I guess, is why I wasn't even aware the Patriarchy Movement until just recently.
McLaren's teachings are so off the deep end that some of the more moderates, like Mark Driscoll, left the movement when McLaren began shaking things up on their Emergent tour. But I'm still not comfortable with Driscoll either. I just find them as a whole to be too lacking in respect for Christ. I'm not saying they don't have respect - just that they don't show it. And that really bothers me.
My sister has gone a good distance down the post-modern, Emergent path and that has caused me tremendous grief and concern. Some of the folks who have read my blog since the beginning probably recognized posts along the way that sprung from discussions I had with my sister. She doesn't like the words "sin" or "repent" and she talks all the time about the need for the local church to "be relevant."
It's not a good direction for us to be heading.
