I'm in love

We have two cars—both of which we need since my work takes me to Washington, D.C., at least once a week. But my wife's 1999 Mitsubishi Mirage has 170,000+ miles on the odometer and my 2001 Dodge Intrepid has 160,000+ miles. We drive a lot.

So we began the car search process a little while ago. I had almost settled on the Mazda Speed3—a fun little car with loads of performance but almost no interior room. The Mazda had another drawback that was particularly egregious—it is available with a manual transmission only, and my wife cannot drive a manual transmission car.

So it was all up in the air, awaiting further decision-making in April or thereabouts. Ever since my 1970 Chevrolet Camaro, I have wanted another car that could equal it. It was my dream car. But I had not seen anything that got into my blood the way that car did until recently. And now there are two cars that affect me that way—the Dodge Charger and the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. Of course, the Camaro is not yet for sale and Chevy is somewhat on the rocks financially right now.

But the Camaro has now been released for pre-sale at select dealerships. I have read the reports. I have listened to Jay Leno's opinion (Jay knows cars). And I have fallen in love with what will likely be my next car:

Here's hoping.

  1. Nah, get the Charger. I sat in one of those babies when we bought our new Ram this fall. Very awesome. If it's good enough for the state troopers, why not you??

  2. Well - the reason it's not good enough for me came from one of our local police officers whose police car is a Charger. The version that I would get (the big V-8) gets about 8 miles to the gallon, according to the police officer. Of course, that would be driving it in the way police drive their cars, which I'm sure I would do at times. I don't think that would do very well for my 400-mile round-trip commute to work. The six cylinder Charger is rather sluggish.

The Camaro six cylinder actually has more horsepower than a Mustang GT and is reportedly quite quick. And it gets almost 30 miles to the gallon. And it costs less than the econobox Mazda Speed3 we were considering.

So if Chevy is still in business in a few months, and if I'm still employed (Lord willing, and the creek don't rise)....
