He wasn’t kidding about “Change”

Obama has made many policy moves that I disagree with and his election and success has motivated the liberals on the Hill to push things they would not have considered just a few months ago. But as problematic and dangerous as many of those things have been, this one is absolutely frightening!

A new Bill is making its way through Congress right now. HR 1388 deals with the establishment of what is being termed "The Obama Youth Brigade." Its official name is “Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act” or the “GIVE Act.”

This Act would establish a youth organization reminiscent of the infamous “Hitler Youth Program” as described at HitlerControl.com. (HT: Scott Hart).

Those involved in the GIVE youth program would be required to follow some guidelines that I think most of America would find shocking. In particular, it seems to me that no Christians (or other committed religious people) could be involved in this youth program.

Here are some excerpts from HR1388, currently being considered by Congress:

SEC. 1304. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES AND INELIGIBLE ORGANIZATIONS.

Section 125 (42 U.S.C. 12575) is amended to read as follows:

SEC. 125. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES AND INELIGIBLE ORGANIZATIONS.

(a) Prohibited Activities- A participant in an approved national service position under this subtitle may not engage in the following activities:

(1) Attempting to influence legislation.

(2) Organizing or engaging in protests, petitions, boycotts, or strikes.

(7) Engaging in religious instruction, conducting worship services, providing instruction as part of a program that includes mandatory religious instruction or worship, constructing or operating facilities devoted to religious instruction or worship, maintaining facilities primarily or inherently devoted to religious instruction or worship, or engaging in any form of religious proselytization.

And here's another document worth considering in light of this new Bill, the Constitution of the United States of America:

AMENDMENT I OF
THE CONSTITUTION OF
THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

  2. Just a note -- this particular program is a "earn and learn" type of program, requiring three years of public service in exchange for an education grant. It requires application and acceptance into the program. Participation in the current is about 75,000. With the changes that this bill proposes, the goal is to increase that participation to 250,000.

Although, by the terms of the prohibitions, an evangelical Christian would naturally be excluded, it does not mean that you cannot attend church. But you can't teach, lead worship, or share your faith. Leaves a lot of us out of the program, doesn't it? Think of three years of never sharing your faith -- I guess that wouldn't be "redeeming the time," would it?

  3. I'm almost bothered as much by the other prohibitions as I am the restrictions on proselytizing. We are watching our freedoms go down the drain.

Liberty is a Judeo-Christian concept and the further we get away from those principles, the less liberty we will have.

  4. Richard,

Thanks so much for posting this. I think I'm so upset by it, I can't even think straight enough to figure out what to say about it.

There's a part of me that figured that we would be challenged by such things, but I didn't think that the public would be so accepting of it. This kind of thing was a fear when I was a child, but I always anticipated that there would be more hot controversy and opposition to it on a large scale when it eventually came.

Now it slips in silently and unnoticed, and THE ONE must know that this is the right thing to do, so it is acceptable and accepted. What a disappointment to watch America slip into such an open embrace of fascism.

    God have mercy on us.

Mary, you are right. There is not a time in my life where I would have ever qualified for participation in this program. I wonder how the strong, active Jewish communities will respond to this? If you hang out at and are involved at the local JCC, I would imagine that you would be excluded, too. That alienates a lot of people.

  5. Cindy - thank you for bringing this to my attention. It is truly appalling and I am as surprised as you at how quietly America is falling into despotism. Our founding fathers would be ashamed.

In fact, as I recall, John Locke is one of your heroes. His view of liberty has apparently been lost on the current generation of Americans. We may need to endure the same chains and slavery that gave rise to the struggles for liberty that our founders and their philosophical partners were so actively involved in.
