Quote of the day

Sigmund Freud;– Genius (and Romantic)

"One special form of contact, which consists of mutual approximation of the mucous membranes of the lips in a kiss, has received a sexual value among the civilized nations, though the parts of the body do not belong to the sexual apparatus and merely form the entrance to the digestive tract."

Sigmund Freud, The Sexual Aberrations

  1. Before kissing, couples hooked thumbs! (Identify that literary allusion.)

  2. I can't even imagine. (I'm not as well-read as I should be, but don't tell anyone.)

I don't think we were allowed to kiss at BBC, whether our thumbs were hooked or not.

  3. It's from the Princess Bride!!! It's a parenthetical remark. He talks about how kissing was invented and then throws in, "Before that, couples hooked thumbs."

  4. Oh my ... I should have recognized that. It's the Alzheimers, I'm sure. Thanks for the reminder. And, of course, the history lesson. After all, that was when Buttercup was not even in the top 100 of most beautiful women. So that is ancient history.

  5. Yup. And jealousy is associated with the color green, he says, because it originally concerned people's jealousy over plants--the other guy's cacti were more beautiful. I can personally attest to the force of plant jealousy, living as I do in a neighborhood where everybody vies to have the most beautiful lawn. Thirteen years ago I moved here and said I would never do that, and now here I am being exactly like that and proud of my lawn. :-)
